Haematite and Pyrite - The Iron Rich Gems

Haematite - sometimes spelt the American way, Hematite and Iron Pyrite are so popular as gems. Deep steely, metallic greys from Haematite and brassy yellows glowing from Pyrite make them so attractive as gemstones. Their heavy nature gives away the quantity of iron that they contain as iron ores. It seems a shame to use them for such a mundane fate, but never the less, the minerals are important as iron ores for industry. I won't go mad on the 'science bit' as I often do, so will launch into the gorgeous creations found on Folksy for your delight! Please click on the pictures to be taken to the items in the artisans shops. http://folksy.com/shops/NOfkantsCurios ..............Haematite can be carved well, as is demonstrated in this lovely keyring featuring a haematite turtle, by Natalie Ofkants. http://folksy.com/shops/DeborahJonesJewellery ..............Haematite can be polished to a smooth, reflective, metallic shine.
